Prof. Stan wants YOU
Are you a “dual user” of cigarettes and vapes? Do you live in the San Francisco Bay area? Want to make some money helping the world’s foremost anti-nicotine zealot find ammunition to demonize vaping?
You remember our old friend Prof. Stanton Glantz, right? He’s the mechanical engineer/cardiology professor who became the most influential anti-smoking activist in the country, and runs the FDA/NIH-funded Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science (TCORS) at the University of California-San Francisco. Glantz has never been shy about making wild claims about vaping.
The professor’s accomplishments include co-authoring a famous piece of junk science on secondhand smoke that helped create momentum for indoor smoking bans across the country, publishing a “meta-review” of vaping literature that supposedly proves that vaping makes smokers less likely to quit, and helping to drum a respected scientist out of a job for daring to question the secondhand smoke orthodoxy of the Glantzian California establishment.
Pssst…wanna make some easy money?
Now his UCSF tobacco “research” operation is looking for a few dual users. An ad in the Bay Area Craig’s List job postings popped up recently, offering smokers who also vape as much as $2,030 to participate in a study. It sounds pretty good.
Do you smoke both tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes? If so, we need you to help us find out the health effects of e-cigarettes. There is so much we have yet to discover about the use of e-cigarettes.
This study involves 2 visits to the UCSF Tobacco Research Center, 8 outpatient days (at home), and 8 days at San Francisco General Hospital. You will be compensated up to $2,030 for your time.
If you are interested, please email us at show contact info . Please leave your name, phone number, number of cigarettes smoked per day, brand name of cigarette (include full flavor or lights), brand of electronic cigarettes and the best time to reach you.
Of course, they’re going to examine these supposed dual users and discover known biomarkers for tobacco harm, and then conclude that using e-cigarettes along with any number of combustible cigarettes is a risk as large as just smoking. Or something equally stupid and awful.
They can prove that someone smokes — a simple carbon monoxide test does that — but there’s no way to know for sure if a prospective test subject has ever vaped. So what they’re likely to do is examine a lot of smokers and then claim that they were also vapers, and then draw conclusions about the health risks of “dual use.”
Glantz has a thing about dual use. He likes to imply that there’s something especially sinister about a smoker also vaping, as though it doubles the risk — which it doesn’t. As Dr. Michael Siegel explains in the video above, any reduction in the number of cigarettes someone smokes is a good thing. Even if the smoker doesn’t quit completely, the risk of lung disease and cancer is lowered by smoking less.
If you know any smokers in the Bay Area, ask them to please not help fuel Glantz’s bizarre anti-nicotine crusade. No work at his FDA-funded San Francisco lie factory will do an ounce of good for smokers, vapers, or anyone else…except maybe Stan and his glassy-eyed acolytes.
