The evidence is building that vaping is a healthier alternative to smoking, and now even Public Health England is getting in on the conversation.
Public Health England, which is the UK’s version of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has recently completed a review on the effects of vaping. The results are good news for vapers — vaping has been found to be 95 percent less harmful than cigarettes.
While the findings from PHE are not surprising to those in the vaping community, the statement that vaping is less harmful than smoking is quite a different tone than that of U.S. government officials, who have continuously been opposed to vaping. U.S. government bodies have waged war on the vaping industry from the beginning, advocating that vaping is just as harmful as smoking.
Now, however, Public Health England is standing firm against those claims. And it’s not the first time that the UK and US officials have bumped heads in the health community. In 1926, the UK formed a study that concluded that drug addiction should be treated with trained medical staff and safe drug practices. The U.S. handled drug addiction the opposite way — with no access to drugs as part of their treatment.
However, as Science 20 pointed out in their reporting this week, PHE has its detractors. Editors from both The Lancet and The British Medical Journal have lashed out at PHE, stating that “PHE claims that it protects and improves the nation’s health and well-being…. On this occasion, it has fallen short of its mission.”
Many in the vaping community are speculating on the debate surrounding PHE’s findings, with experts within the industry commenting that the criticisms seem to be based on the scientific methodology of the review, but is in fact just mired in anti-vaping rhetoric. This seems to be the purveying thought, as many critics already have a long history of being opposed to vaping in any form.
But vaping is gaining attention. Soon it will be recognized as a healthier and safer alternative to smoking, allowing people who have always wanted to quit to do so with the peace of mind that vaping can actually help them. And while the battle to make vaping acceptable rages on, we will continue to bring you the latest in vaping news.
